Board of Directors
The five-member Board of Trustees includes past and present parents, industry leaders, and two members of the current administrative team. The Board is the governing body of the school, as a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, and holds the final authority in matters of property, funding, and appointments of the President, Head of School, and the Board of Directors. The President and Head of School are responsible for carrying out the mission of the school.
Mary Kay Roma
Mary Kay Roma, Esq., is an owner and partner of Toyota of Southern Maryland in Lexington Park, Maryland. In that capacity she has procured, constructed and managed commercial real estate for the dealership. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, she practiced corporate law at the US Postal Service headquarters and managed the FHA Single Family Law Department at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She has extensive experience in non-profit management and was a treasurer of the non-profit Chesapeake Orchestra and supported numerous local charities through Toyota’s corporate giving-back program. She graduated from George Washington University, Washington, DC in 1979 and from DePaul School of Law in Chicago, Illinois in 1984.
Eric Edmond brings to the Emerson Board a strong financial and management background, having served in various leadership roles in W.R Grace, Inc. He holds an MBA from Duke University and a BA from the University of Virginia. He has two children, one of whom has learning differences, which has given Eric an intimate understanding of the challenges and opportunities for students who learn differently.
Ms. Annette Rossi is a Multilingual Security and Foreign Affairs professional with 20 years of progressive global experience in the government, military and law enforcement industries. She currently serves as Eastern Europe Branch Chief in the Department of Defense, Defense Attache Service, managing nine offices located throughout Eastern Europe. She is also a parent of an Emerson Student. Before she joined the Emerson community, Ms. Rossi also worked extensively with her daughter's international school in Hong Kong as they expanded and redeveloped their location.
P. Kevin Smith
Mr. P. Kevin Smith is a managing partner of Invictus Advisory Group, an investment advisory firm. He is deeply dedicated to education and is a board member for Emerson as well as of Brainfood, a nonprofit youth development organization and a Member of Urban Land Institute (www.uli.org). He has travelled extensively throughout the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa; growing start-up ventures; driving revenue for various Fortune 100 companies; successfully implementing solutions and strategies for numerous Public and Private sector entities (Accenture and Computer Sciences Corporation). Most recently, Mr. Smith joined the founding team of LTU technologies and grew the company’s revenue from nascent start-up to significant annual sales and profitability; ultimately leading the company to acquisition by JASTEC, Inc (TSE: 9117). A graduate of Morehouse College, presenter/participate in various advanced leadership and training programs at the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Janet Burstein Svirsky has a PhD in Number Theory from the Johns Hopkins University. She has been a consultant to the Oak Ridge National Lab, and on the faculty of the University of Tennessee and Tulane. She has also taught at the Newport School as well as at Emerson. She has worked with students with exceptional gifts and challenges. Her two children are Emerson alumni. She values the independence given to teachers, and the respect given to students. She is a member of the board because she strongly feels that Emerson needs to exist for those that don’t or won’t fit into neat little boxes.
SangMe Lee, President & CEO
Ms. SangMe Lee brings 20 years of investment banking & management experience to Emerson. She has previously worked at Asian Development Bank at their headquarters in the Philippines, Samsung Securities in Korea, and Goldman Sachs Asia in Korea & Hong Kong, before retiring from the industry in 2015. She holds an MBA from Duke University and a BA from Brown University. She is a parent of two children.
Jon Shickler, Head of School
Mr. Jon Shickler brings over 20 years of experience in teaching to his position as Head of School. As a teacher, his primary fields are composition and literature, and writing across the curriculum, having spent several years in the Northwest Pennsylvania Writers' Project. Since joining Emerson in February 2008, he has served as faculty member, Dean of Students, Associate Head of School, becoming Head of School in June 2015. He holds an MAin English Language and Literate as well as a BA in Professional Writing from Gannon University, and has completed additional graduate work at the Catholic University of America, a move, which happily led him to Washington DC, where he lives with his wife and two children.
