Board of Directors
The Board of Trustees includes past and present parents, industry leaders, and two members of the current administrative team. The Board is the governing body of the school, as a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, and holds the final authority in matters of property, funding, and appointments of the President, Head of School, and the Board of Directors. The President and Head of School are responsible for carrying out the mission of the school.
Ms. Annette Rossi is a Multilingual Security and Foreign Affairs professional with 20 years of progressive global experience in the government, military and law enforcement industries. She currently serves as Eastern Europe Branch Chief in the Department of Defense, Defense Attache Service, managing nine offices located throughout Eastern Europe. She is also a parent of an Emerson Student. Before she joined the Emerson community, Ms. Rossi also worked extensively with her daughter's international school in Hong Kong as they expanded and redeveloped their location.
Mark Grovic co-founded New Markets Venture Partners in 2003 and is a General Partner. Mark serves or has served on the Board of Directors for Credly, Fishtree, Graduation Alliance, Orchestro (formerly Vision Chain, acquired by E2open), Think Through Learning (acquired by Imagine Learning), MediaSolv (acquired by Nasdaq: TASR), Lightningcast (acquired by NYSE: TWX), Moodlerooms (acquired by Blackboard) and Workspace.com. Mark also serves or has served as a board observer for Aldagen (acquired by NASDAQ: CMXI), American Honors College, Andera (acquired by NASDAQ: EPAY), Appfluent (acquired by NASDAQ: ATTU), BioSET (acquired by Ferring Pharmaceuticals), Mashable, Noodle Partners, Overture Technologies, Pairin, Paratek Microwave (acquired by NASDAQ: RIMM) and Questar Assessment (acquired by ETS). Mark also co-founded LifeJourney, an online educational company that allows students to test drive real life careers in specific corporations.
Mark graduated with Honors from the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in political economies and received a Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University, where his focus was in international, tax, and corporate law. Mark has also completed graduate work in accounting and finance at the George Washington University and Pace University, and completed the Private Equity and Venture Capital Executive Program at Harvard Business School. He received a certificate in teaching entrepreneurship from the Babson Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators. Mark lives in Silver Spring, MD with his wife and two children and is a mediocre musician and triathlete.
Dr. Janet Burstein Svirsky has a PhD in Number Theory from the Johns Hopkins University. She has been a consultant to the Oak Ridge National Lab, and on the faculty of the University of Tennessee and Tulane. She has also taught at the Newport School as well as at Emerson. She has worked with students with exceptional gifts and challenges. Her two children are Emerson alumni. She values the independence given to teachers, and the respect given to students. She is a member of the board because she strongly feels that Emerson needs to exist for those that don’t or won’t fit into neat little boxes.
Urvi is an experienced educator and lifelong learner. She is the CEO and Founder of two companies: Strategic EdTech (SET) and SET Lab. Urvi has worked as a Director of EdTech and Innovation, Technology Teaching and Learning Coordinator, and a middle school teacher. She is passionate about edtech, robotics, andragogy and learning through constructionism. Her work alongside teachers, staff, administrators, and students of all ages in education and educational technology has given her the expertise in educational innovation to help schools progress with the values of today’s world within their mission and vision. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto, Bachelor of Education and Masters in Education from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Outside of her work, Urvi can be found teaching and practicing yoga, exploring museums, and reading.
Ms. Holly Cherico is a marketing communication professional with more than a decade of experience creating and leading successful marketing campaigns at several independent and charter schools in the DC Metro area. She currently serves as Director of Marketing and Communications at Commonwealth Academy, a college prep day school in Alexandria, VA that educates and empowers students who have organizational, attention or learning differences. Before entering the education arena, she was an independent public relations contractor for nonprofit organizations and worked for the Council of Better Business Bureaus as Vice President of Public Relations and Communications.
ameliah croft (alumna)
Ameliah L. Croft is a proud graduate of Emerson Preparatory School, where she took her first international relations course and considered pursuing an education in global and cultural affairs. Ameliah now works at the U.S. Department of State, where she has served as a Foreign Affairs Officer since 2013. She is currently the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Desk Officer in the Bureau of African Affairs, and previously held positions in the Africa Bureau’s Office of Economic and Regional Affairs, the Bureau of Counterterrorism’s Africa team, and U.S. Embassy Kinshasa’s Economic Section. She has worked on planning and policy teams in advance of the 2017 U.S.-Africa Ministerial, 2014 U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, UN General Assembly meetings, and the 2014-2016 Our Ocean Conferences. Ameliah joined federal service as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) in 2012. Her prior work experience includes positions at the Department of Health and Human Services, the State Department Foreign Service Institute, Boston University’s African Studies Center, the Logan Museum of Anthropology, and the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum. Ameliah graduated from Boston University with an M.A. in International Relations and Religion as well as an African Studies Certificate, and she earned her Bachelor's degree from Beloit College with a double major in Anthropology and Dance and a minor in Religious Studies.
Mrs. Kathy Minardi holds a BA from St. Olaf College and an MA from the University of Wisconsin. She is a graduate of Georgetown University Institute for Transformational Leadership’s Executive Certificate in Transformational Leadership and Executive Certificate in Facilitation. She also holds certificates from Harvard and MIT in areas of organizational behavior and leadership. She runs a consultancy founded to assist leaders around the world, including school leaders, in guiding healthy communities. She is a leadership coach for the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and has forty years of experience as a school leader that includes a unique background in organizational development and whole systems design. She is a presenter on a wide range of topics including the science of community building, emotional intelligence, and practices to support individual and collective community growth. Kathy holds concentrations in methods for creating health and resilience in organizations and communities. They include Circle Process across numerous lineages for reconciliation, peacemaking and restorative justice, Open Space Technology, and the social art of Story Bridge.
